Job Absence & Turnover Rate 1st Quarter 2008

Absence Rate Near Historic Lows Despite Rise From First Quarter of 2007

Employee absence rate averaged 1.0 percent of scheduled worker days through the first three months of 2008. This 1.0 percent figure marks a decline from the previous quarter (1.2 percent) but remains above the 0.8 percent rate of unscheduled absences recorded in the first quarter of 2007. Despite this year-over-year increase in 2008 first quarter absences, it continues to be well below the absence rate recorded in the first 3 months of 2006 (1.5 percent), 2005 (2.0 percent) and first quarter figures from 2000 to 2004.

First quarter absences (excluding long-term absences and partial days out) bucked the typical seasonal pattern by declining during the winter months. The median rate of unscheduled absences fell from 1.3 percent in December 2007 to 0.9 percent in January 2008, climbed to 1.1 percent in February and retreated to 0.9 in March of this year.

Unscheduled Absence: Jan. - Mar.

Turnover in First Quarter 2008 Up Slightly From First Quarter 2007 Levels
Median monthly separation rates (excluding layoffs, reductions-in-force, and departures of temporary staff) averaged 1.1 percent of employers' workforces per month in the first quarter of 2008. The 1.1 percent turnover figure is up only marginally from that recorded in the first and last quarters of 2007 (1.0 percent).

The seasonal tendency for turnover to rise at the beginning of the year was only slightly in evidence in the first quarter of the year. Median monthly worker separations among surveyed employers rose from 0.9 percent in December 2007 to 1.2 percent in January of this year before falling back to 1.0 percent in February and March of 2008. While weaker employment prospects historically tend to have a dampening effect on worker attrition, this pattern was not yet evident in the first quarter of this year.
